“We’re increasing the choice and flexibility of how we provide support and accommodation options.”

In the past 12 months we have provided support to just over 2,000 people across Australia living with a disability.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

Life Without Barriers was an inaugural provider for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) launched on 1 July 2013 in Tasmania for young people aged 15-24, in South Australia for children aged 13 and under (on 1 July 2014), and in the Barwon area of Victoria and the Hunter area in NSW for people up to age 65.

Implementing the scheme has required both LWB and clients to work even closer together as systems and processes were put in place and tested, almost simultaneously. As a national organisation we‘ve been able to capture the learnings as each site rolled out placing our clients and teams at a greater advantage at subsequent site launches, by benefiting from this value first-hand information and experience.

Person-centred support

LWB believes that the people we support should play the biggest role in designing their supports, as part of our person-centred planning.

We’re continually increasing the choice and flexibility of service provision and accommodation options for the people we support, to complement support from family, friends and other services.

Our disability support services make daily tasks easier and aim to provide more opportunities for individuals to live their life as independently as possible by offering levels of support specific to their needs and requests. Clients will increasingly be seeking support in their home, but also may require self-selected services while in assisted living accommodation or high-care facilities.

Our Disability Support services include:

  • accommodation options
  • supported accommodation
  • host families
  • in-home support
  • respite care options
  • clinical support services
  • community access and participation
  • recreation activities
  • mentoring opportunities
  • transition support
  • education support, and
  • employment services.

We’ve developed a model of flexible support to ensure personal care, social and skill development tailored to suit individual clients and their living arrangements; and provide three accommodation options for clients with a disability:

  • home-based support - delivering long-term assistance at home
  • host-families - providing safe and supportive living environments
  • community-based houses, apartments, group homes or residential units.

Support at Home

LWB provides a range of flexible in-home services supporting people to live independently in their own home including personal care (Home and Community Care and Attendant Care).

Living with a Host family

Living with a host family can provide a safe and supportive environment, while still ensuring a level of independence. Host-family carers can provide shared, part-time, or full-time support and work closely with LWB and other key people in a client’s life to ensure the client and carer is well matched for personality and need.
